The 15th Annual Classic Car Rally 2014
21st September 2014
Once again our annual Classic Car Rally was a great success with over 60 cars entered ranging from Rolls-Royces, through MGs and Triumphs, to a hand-built American dirt-track racer.
The vehicles gathered at the Lakeside Restaurant (part of the Ponderosa complex) from 9 a.m. and were arranged in the car park. While the drivers and their navigators were being treated to a superb Full English Breakfast in the restaurant, the vehicles were being judged. There are trophies for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places for the best prepared vehicles and an additional trophy - The Syd Colman Trophy - awarded to the vehicle that catches the judge's eye, maybe for being a bit unusual or outstanding in some other way.
After breakfast, and feeling full, the drivers set off on a 70 mile run guided by their navigators who were following the carefully prepared instruction sheet they had been given. This year the run was down the length of the Pennines from the Delph/Rochdale area to High Hoyland along lovely quiet roads with marvellous scenery and few stops available at pleasant watering-holes. The weather remained good all day so the convertible cars could drive with the top down and the wind in their hair.
Returning back to the Lakeside the raffle was drawn and the trophies awarded to the deserving winners.
The annual Classic Car Rally is a charity event and is the main fund raising event of the club with money coming from sponsorship, entry fees and advertising in the rally booklet. We thank all those who contributed this year.
Over the last year the club has raised money for many charities including Kirkwood Hospice, Macmillan Nurses, Marie Curie Cancer Care, Farm Africa, Children's Air Ambulance and many others.
