The 17th Annual Classic Car Rally 2016
25th September 2016
Once again our annual Classic Car Rally was a great success with over 60 cars entered with plenty of MG's, Triumphs and E-Types along with some exotic machinery such as the Morgan Aero.
The vehicles gathered at the Star Inn in Roberttown, Liversedge from 9 a.m. for a display in the car park, although with so many cars present there was an overflow onto the road! While the drivers and their navigators were being treated to a superb Full English Breakfast in the pub, the vehicles were being judged. There are trophies for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places for the best prepared vehicles, and an additional trophy - The Syd Colman Trophy - awarded to the vehicle that catches the judge's eye, maybe for being a bit unusual or outstanding in some other way.
After breakfast, and feeling full, the drivers set off on a 70 mile run guided by their navigators who were following the carefully prepared instruction sheet they had been given. This year the run took the cars northwards, through Bradford and then out into the beautiful countryside passing through Summerbridge, past Brimham Rocks, on to Ripon and ending at Lightwater Valley.
A fantastic display of cars was put on in our own car park which attracted a lot of attention from members of the public. There was a cafe where participants could have lunch as well as some shops selling clothing, books and gifts to wander around and for the more adventerous discount tickets were kindly provided for the theme park. The participants then gathered in the conference room for prize-giving and the raffle draw. First prize was awarded to the magnificent 1935 Triumph Gloria Southern Cross and the Colman prize went to a beutiful 1957 Chevrolet Belair.
The weather was kind to us with overnight rain clearing and the sun comong out by mid-day, and with a run through beautiful scenery, an interesting venue and plenty of cars taking part, it was a very successful day and thanks must go to all who took part for making it so.
The annual Classic Car Rally is a charity event and is the main fund raising event of the club with money coming from sponsorship, entry fees and advertising in the rally booklet. We thank all those who contributed this year.
The club has raised money to support many charities including Action on Hearing Loss, Army Benevolent Fund, BASH Local, Breast care, Cerebra, Diabetes Appeal, Forget Me Not Children's Hospice, Gambian Schools Trust, Kids Out, Kirkwood Hospice, Leeds Child Heart Surgery, Outlook Trust, Polio Plus, Royds Park Railway, The Adolescent and Children's Trust and many others.
